EXCURSION: Day Trip to Wadi Hitan, The Valley of the Whales
Join ARCE on a day excursion to the Wadi Hitan ("Valley of the Whales"), a paleontological site in Al Fayium Governorate of Egypt, some 150 km southwest of Cairo. During the late Eocene-Oligocene times (40 to 31 million years ago) the Fayium area was a delta of many rivers coming from the east. The sea shoreline was just to the north of Fayium area, hence the area is rich in both sea and land animals. In Qasr El Sagha scarp and Gebel Qatrani, many aquatic and fresh water animals were recorded and their fossil remains are still found in plenty. The Wadi Hitan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005 for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest whales.
